The Black Parisian

So…clearly, I’m black, but definitely not Parisian…but I did get to hang out with Nicholle Kobi (@theBlakParisian).

A few weeks ago, the message came through that her Black Women Art Series Tour was coming to the U.S., but most importantly, it was coming to the ATX.  As an entrepreneur, every dollar counts, but that $40 for the VIP was well worth it.  So, I kept checking my calendar…I did stop short of actually marking the days off the calendar.

The day finally came and I could hardly contain myself.  I was giddy with excitement.  While Austin is packed with things to do, it’s rare that a cultural experience for us, by us actually comes to Austin.

Listen, I’ve been stanning for Nicholle’s art, when it was Nikki’s Groove on Instagram.  I was surprised to learn that she started displaying her art on IG under that psuedo-name and no one knew it was her, not even her husband.

So, in my “new” spirit of #shootingforthemoon, I sent Nicholle a message asking if she would  be open to an interview.  I half expected a response, because it was the day of the event.  So, I wasn’t surprised that the “unfortunately…..” response, came through.  It was the next message that came through that gave my fro some volume.  She asked if I would be interested in hosting the talk/Q & A.

Look, I could hardly stand myself….but I quickly but “calmly” said yes.  So, then I went in to prep mode and I was more than ready to sit down for this Q & A.

From my arrival to the venue until the moment that Nicholle arrived, there was nothing but beautiful melanin, smiles, natural hair, and shopping. #blackgirlmagic

The Q &A was really laid back, as the goal was for us to get to know Nicholle.

The questions ranged from why she brought the tour to Austin, to the “controversial” pieces like “don’t shoot”, black love and her affinity for painting pieces about “sisterhood”.

She made a point of telling us that she will always paint black faces, despite many brands wanting her to compromise in this area.

She says that she painted portraits of the Obamas because, although she lives in France, they considered President Obama as their President as well.

The event ended with Nicholle interacting with the crowd and taking pictures.  Check her website/FB page for more dates, but Dallas and Houston you are up next.

I want to thank Nicholle and her team, hey, Joy..hey for giving me the opportunity to host the talk.

Shoutout to the dude who offered to help with the recoding the Q & A for me and all I have is this….
