Shooting for the moon

Things lately from a business perspective have been interesting.  To be honest, there have been times that I wanted to throw up my hands and walk away but “something” keeps me here in this space.

Recently, I’ve decided to put myself out there more, even if it meant rejection. So, I started with SXSW and submitted two panels for consideration.  While that was an accomplishment for me (I started the application process before and then stopped short of pressing SUBMIT), but I only promoted my panel once or twice for my friends/peers to vote for my panel.  Both panels were rejected, however, the panel submitted for clients were accepted.  That was a bummer for me, I cried a little with the mentality that “See, what happens when I put myself out there?”.  It left me with thoughts that I should just stay in the background.

During that same time, I had an opportunity to curate my own event(s) for SXSW, as an approved partner.  So, I put an ask out there and BOOM, she said yes!  The event was sold out and I slowly began to gain my confidence (again….long story).  Though I said very little during this time, I felt extremely blessed to be able to provide something to community that couldn’t activate SXSW because of costs or lack of education about the festival.  #shootingforthemoon

Then, I asked for a meeting with someone that I only knew from following them on social media.  She, too said yes, and agreed to meet with me.  We talked about the conference circuit and what I was trying to accomplish.  While my panel wasn’t accepted, I will have the opportunity to be a roundtable speaker for this SOLD OUT conference. #shootingforthemoon

So, how to do you get out of your own way and begin #shootingforthemoon

  •  Just pull the trigger
    • There will always be a reason why you shouldn’t do something.  Just start. Push through the insecurity that’s stopping you. Because once start, your momentum does, too, and soon you will forget about the things you were anxious about
  • No doesn’t mean rejection
    • Listen…nobody wants to be rejected.  Here’s another way of looking at rejection. If you’re rejected from something, you’re being directed to something else. Stay positive and keep the faith that the good will come.  #rejectionmeansredirection
  • Practice saying yes
    • Tell yourself over and over that yes, you can do this.  Yes, you are worthy of this.  Yes, YOU!
  • Demonstrate confidence and passion
    • Yes, I know it’s easier said than done.  Confidence is a muscle that you have to keep exercising.
  • Phone a friend
    • During those moments of self doubt, call a trusted friend and share with them what you are trying to accomplish and listen to their feedback.  When you allow them “in” your friends can be your biggest support system
